I finished the modular game board, and found it lacking. I think most of the problems is my craftmanship, which needs a lot of work. The biggest problem was that I found the screw in nuts after I tried to glue in regular nuts, and tried to use the same wood. Most of them seem stable enough, but found a few that I think I just need to be rebuild. I tried it out on my dining room table and the ends were to weak because of the unstable screw in nuts, so there were raised gaps. I also found that I some how I gained about a 1/4" some place and the boards don't fit as snug as I would like. Over all I don't think the design isn't so bad.
As Windows is deciding to be difficult(big surprise) and I need to get up early tomorrow morning, I will try and upload some pictures another time on this. I will probably try and add it to this blog entry, worse case I add another entry with better news.
UPDATE: Here are the pictures I promised. The first two you can see the frame and the boards layed out on top.
A closer look you can see that my poor craftmanship and it seems to be that the frames aren't that tight for this to work. I will need to try and replace the female connections as they are glued in and that didn't help much. I think the design still could work, but I think worse case the cross beams at least should be a solid piece instead of bolted together. If things go better here for gaming I might look at rebuilding this and be a bit smarter in putting it together. I think my next project will involve just framing the 2'x2' panels, and making them doweling together, basically solution 3 in the gaming projects.
