Vegetable Garden Journal: 2011-04-09

Things have been going pretty smooth with the seedlings. As you can see there are quite a few that have popped up and also quite a few that haven't yet. One concern I had was the temperture in the basement where these are at. For the most part it doesn't seem as bad, the lowest it has been is 53 degrees F, which isn't too bad. Lately it has gotten to highs in the low 60's in the basement. Next year I need to check what the temp is before I start, when it hits about 50 for lows I should be able to start.

Seedlings at 2 weeks

As you can see Yellow Beans and some of the green beans are just starting to pop up. A couple of the peas have sprouted. Just the morning a Big Beef Tomato popped out. Most of the Swiss Chard and the Salad mix have sprouted. Everything else hasn't made it up yet. I am still planning next weekend to add in the cucumbers, squash and canalope to the tray to get them started. I think next year I am going to take a closer look at the germination times of these plants before I decide when to plant them.

I have been doing walks of the gardens and took a look where I had my vegetable garden last year. I was surprised to see a few of the plants continuing where they left off. I have some onion that seems to have sprouted which was kind of suspected. The surprise was that Garlic plants and some leeks were starting to grow. The garlic last year when I planted them sprouted a little but seem to die out. I didn't expect them to show up again and figured I would have to replant them. Below are a couple picutres I took of the vegetable garden.

Another note animals have been eating already. I seen some tracks from deer in the vegetable garden and some of the flower plants also have been munched on. Going to start using liquid fence to help deter animals and see if it helps. Just have to remember to do it after a rain storm.

Vegetable Garden before anything is done. Surprise Garlic and some onions starting already.
