This is the second year for my vegetable garden, but unfornately I don't have any detailed notes. I have at least have some theories and things to improve on. I will be keeping a journal here or at least links to entries to one.
The Plan
A couple things I am trying new this year. One major change is that I am going to be starting most of my seed early this year, this will allow me to start a lot earlier and possibly get produce earlier. It will also help give the plant more of chance against pests and weeds. Another thing I am planning on doing is adding a second garden, which is facing more east to get the morning and possibly some more afternood sun. I will be continue to use my garden on the west side of the garage. I am not entirely sure what is going where yet, but I do know what I have started will fit.
I will also be adding some vegetables and possibly some herbs to my bigger "flower" garden. There is a plant that I have yet to identify will be dug out and replaced with sunflower and corn plants. As the previous plant was a bit of pest and was quite large these plants will make a nice and productive replacement.
My planned list of vegetables and herbs are:
Green Beans | Yellow Beans | Snap Peas | Roma Tomatoes |
Big Beef Tomatoes | Green Peppers | Jelapeno Peppers | A Salad Mix |
Swiss Chard | Sweet Basil | Spicy Globe Basil | Sage |
Marjoram | Oregeno | Coriander | Onion Chives |
Garlic Chives | Cucumber | Canalope | Spagetti Squash |
Summer Squash | Sweet Corn | Sun Flowers | Rosemary |
Radishes | Carrots | Potatoes (maybe) | Leeks |
The Result
This year was more or less a dud. Ended up with one sunflower that I hope to harvest in the next week or so. I got a couple meals with green beans, the yellow didn't seem to come up. I have some swiss chard but the plants are pretty small. The salad mix came up and even tried a salad from it, found the mustard greens have a bite. I also got two cucumbers off the only vine that came up. Tomatoes, peppers and the peas died off due to the plant that wouldn't die and Round up sprayed around it. I was able to get a few tomatoes but were pretty small. I think part of the problem with the peas was it was too dry for them.
I was also able to get some garlic but was pretty small. I took the seeds that developed from the garlic and replanted them. I also broke up the onions and replanted them to hopefully get something bigger. I think part of the problem with the garlic and onions is the soil is pretty hard, I hope to try breaking it up a bit.
Everything is cleaned up, both the vegetables and the flower gardens.
