I did a big no-no. I didn't keep up with my watering after the tomato sprouted and I kill the plants, except for a pot of Romas. I also waited too long to fix the problem. I am going to try again anyways and hope for the best, my tomatoes and peppers might be a bit late this year.
I was able to scrape up some seeds for the Better Boy and Opalka that were clinging to the bottom of the seed packet. Hopefully they are viable seeds, but I am definitly out now of those seeds. The delicious tomatoes I might have had one seed left so we will see if we have any of those. I decided to try another type of tomato that my Mom suggested, which is the Brandywine Red that I just ran out and got a packet of. It is a bit late to be starting tomatoes, but there might just be enough time. I am going to keep these on the heating pad until I plant them in the garden just to help speed up the process.
The jalapeno seeds were a bust, none of them sprouted. It turns out that my partner had frozen some of the harvest last year so I went in, defrosted one and took the seeds. I dried the seeds out for a couple days and today I planted them in the pots I was using before. I don't know how viable those seeds will be, but as always this is an experiment. It is also really late to be starting peppers.
With any luck I will have some tomatoes and peppers ready to plant about mid-May. I might start some of the garden earlier and give these plants some time to grow. In about a week from now I will be looking to add to my onions, looking in the garden today there are a few that are already starting to green again so there is a start. As we go through a lot of onions it might be good to add a few more. There are also some garlic that is sprouting as well, but I will not be adding any as I have plenty from last year. I will probably also start the squash in about week or two as well, indoors.
Wish me luck, I am going to need it.
